Ep. 18 | Becoming More of Me

I’m back with some of my deep thoughts. As I reflect from the serene Northern California coast, I'm excited to share my journey towards embracing and becoming more of my true self. In episode 18 on Live Stoked, Lead Stoked podcast, I explore my experiences with endurance challenges like the 29029 Everesting event at Whistler, the highs and lows of my athletic pursuits, and the lessons learned from committing to my training plan.

Turning Points and New Chapters

In my venture into authorship with a book I have contemplated for nearly two decades, originally titled 'Live Stoked: Waking Up in the Wrong Life and Finding My Way Back to Me', I reflect on how this title, and its implication of returning to a former self, doesn’t quite align with my life story. Instead, I want to introduce a concept that has resonated deeply with me. Particularly following an tiring but enlightening physical challenge—29029 Everesting. This challenge was not just a physical test but a transformative journey that prompted me to embrace the concept of 'becoming more of me' rather than reverting to who I once was.

Physical Endeavors as Metaphors for Life

The 29029 Everesting challenge marks a significant point in my story. Undertaking this with my husband for our 50th birthday, there was a rigorous physical and mental preparation involved. It wasn’t just about conquering physical heights but also about overcoming the mental and emotional barriers that often hinder us. Past missteps in my training for other events allowed me to see that this time, adherence to a structured plan was crucial. This disciplined approach symbolizes how structure and planning in any aspect of life can lead to healthier and more fulfilling outcomes.

Embracing the Pace of Your Journey

A pivotal realization that I share is accepting my pace—acknowledging that being 'slow' is not a detriment but a unique trait that has its advantages, like endurance. This acceptance and adaptation to my true self is what I define as 'becoming more of me'. It’s a powerful testament to embracing one's qualities rather than conforming to external expectations. I feel I exemplify this through my renewed passion for trail running. Embracing each run not just as exercise, but as an enriching experience that revitalizes my spirit.

Leadership and Facilitating Authentic Growth

Towards the end of the episode, I transition the discussion towards leadership and the impact of enabling others to embrace their authentic selves. It is important to recognize both the strengths and shortcomings in individuals we lead. By nurturing an environment where personal quirks and traits are seen as assets rather than flaws, leaders can foster a more dynamic and supportive workspace. I challenge you to think about how you can facilitate growth—not just for yourself but also for those around you, thereby enriching their collective experiences.

This episode provides a richness of thoughts on personal growth, embracing one’s true self, and fostering an environment where others can also thrive authentically. 'Becoming More of Me' isn’t just about self-acceptance; it's a continuous journey of discovery, challenge, and transformation that is both deeply personal and universally relevant.
